Explore is a series of utensils that challenge the user to reconsider the way they eat, the expectations of what eating implements should look like, where they belong on the table and the obviousness of function. These utensils force the user to experiments and explore the possible functions of each piece. Analytically working them out is not the goal, just have fun and see what each piece is capable of! They deliberately blur the line between functional object and art.
Each piece in the Explore series is both sculptural and functional. They stand up rather than lying flat, challenging the traditional form and orientation of cutlery. Each piece consists of 2 parts; the eating utensil – made from food-grade stainless steel – and a timber insert – created from offcuts of ebony, oak and walnut. The timber insert is a resting place for the utensil during a meal. When not in use, the insert and utensil fit together as if they were one – they become sculptures, a piece of art for the centre of the table.
